Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

Informative events, individual counselling, course modules, career evenings, practical training, and Economic Field research are available to students from Class 8 upwards. From the academic year 2013/14, Class 11 students participate in a University and Careers Orientation trip to Germany. German is the medium of instruction in all subjects, and a DFU concept provides language support to help non-German-speaking students participate and to ensure language development. Remedial German-language lessons are offered to students in Classes 5–10 as needed.

Arts and Creative

Clubs and activities are offered in the afternoons (Monday–Thursday). They are run by parents, students themselves, teachers, and external experts and are chosen for one semester, meeting for 1 or 1.5 hours outside normal lessons. Activities may be artistic, cultural, sporting, mathematical/scientific, information-technological, or craft in nature, and are coordinated by the Deputy Head of the school. These activities aim to develop self-confidence, responsibility, team spirit, enthusiasm, joy, creativity, and subject knowledge.

Cultural and Language

Cultural exchange is important, and four projects have been undertaken to date. One project is the admission of Kenyan students to the German School Nairobi (Scholarship Programme). The School Exchange with Nairobi Academy provides German and Kenyan students the opportunity to interact, with cooperation on sporting and cultural activities. German language is promoted through courses for non-German-speaking parents and all employees, and French–German relations are maintained to strengthen motivation for French as a subject.

Social and Hobbies

Clubs and activities are offered in the afternoons Monday–Thursday. They can be artistic, cultural, sporting, mathematical/scientific, information technology, or craft in nature and are run by parents, students, teachers, and external experts. Clubs are chosen for one semester and meet for 1 or 1.5 hours outside normal lessons; the Deputy Head coordinates them. The activities promote self-confidence, responsibility, team spirit, enthusiasm, joy, creativity, and subject knowledge.

Community and Service

Community Service is part of the programme for Class 9; students choose at least 10 hours of Community Service for the academic year and sign a commitment form with parental co-signature. They must find a suitable social institution and report their experience; upon completion, they receive a certificate and the hours are recorded in their report. Students in other classes may undertake Community Service outside the programme with certification after discussion with the class teacher.

Leadership and Professional

East Africa Model United Nations (MUN) is offered to students in Classes 7–11, including Middle School MUN (classes 7–8) and East Africa MUN (classes 9–11) at UNEP near the German School Nairobi. Preparation occurs in a double lesson each week, led by MUN coordinators; teams are normally four delegates drawn from several classes. Participation is voluntary; successful delegates represent countries and work to draft resolutions. The programme develops intercultural competence, debate skills, and the ability to forge a consensus.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Sporting events are a significant part of school life, including Athletics, Swimming Galas, and ball sports; there are inter-school competitions and multiple event formats. The school participates in the International Sports School League and hosts a tennis tournament against Kenton College, among other fixtures. Younger students take part in events such as Globall, while senior students compete in Inter-School Athletics Meetings at Kasarani Stadium and in regular friendly matches against other schools. Through these activities, students learn teamwork, fair play, and social experience.
