The Mombasa Academy was established in 1978 by Mr. F.J Bentley in Nyali, drawing expatriate families to its early community. The original campus consisted of the headmaster's residence ground floor, seven classrooms and a laboratory; in 1980 a half-Olympic size swimming pool was completed, followed by Music and Mathematics rooms in 1981 and a multi-purpose Assembly Hall in 1982, with a further 2.5 acre plot acquired in 1984 for playing fields. In 1986 the school changed hands after the founder's illness, with the new owner, Mr. Prem Prinja, investing in infrastructure and landscaping; a secondary block and teaching staff flats were added. By 1989 the Junior School was moved to an adjacent plot, and six teaching staff flats were erected, with a further fourteen flats added subsequently.
The Mombasa Academy fosters an active school community through events and service activities. On 14 November 2025, students participated in a Citizenship Community Action Project focused on cleaning Nyali Beach, guided by teachers and emphasizing environmental awareness and active citizenship. The school also hosts inter-house activities and seasonal events, including an Inter-house Poetry Competition, a Halloween Party and Spirit Week, contributing to a vibrant school life.
