Established in 1997 in Riga, Latvia, ISR is an independent, not-for-profit school offering an international education from Toddlers to Grade 12 for 305 students representing more than 47 nationalities. The school operates on two centrally located campuses: the Primary Campus at Kalnciema 118 and the Secondary Campus at Skanstes 27. The ISR Board of Directors is elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting, and ISR is registered in the Latvian Registry of Associations; membership is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of enrolled students. The school is an International Baccalaureate World School, with Primary Years Programme for preschool–Grade 5, Middle Years Programme for Grades 6–10, and Diploma Programme for Grades 11–12; it is a Candidate School for the IB MYP. Instruction is in English, with English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, and students who do not require EAL may study foreign languages including French, Latvian or Spanish.
ISR community is supported by the ISR Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), a group of parents/guardians and teachers who volunteer to bring the school community together and run activities beyond academics. The PTO provides opportunities for families to be involved and to interact with teachers, and it coordinates a wide range of activities to enrich the ISR community, including local trips and charity events. Within the ISR community the PTO organizes activities such as Friday Coffee Mornings in the city center, Ice-cream days, museum visits, Family Fun Days, teacher and staff appreciation days, Santa visits with gifts, Winter Bazaar, Halloween activities, and supports school concerts. Instruction is in English, with English as an Additional Language support; languages such as Latvian, French and Spanish are offered as world language options. The school provides the International Baccalaureate continuum: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for preschool–Grade 5, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6–10 (the Middle School uses the IMYC in part), and the Diploma Programme (DP) for Grades 11–12. ISR is an IB World School and a Candidate School for the MYP. The Secondary Campus is near the Olympic Centre, with modern facilities for PE. It also offers 40+ activities through the ASA program, including STEM workshops and arts, culture, and service programs; Latvian cultural experiences are provided through Latvijas Skolas soma.
