Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school promotes healthy relationships and ethical responsibility. Through collaboration, open communication, and a safe learning environment designed to meet diverse learning needs, the school supports student well-being and personal growth.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The Inclusion / SEN Policy recognises responsibility to identify and provide support for students with special educational needs, offering accommodations, modifications, and, when needed, Individual Education Plans (IEPs). The policy defines SEN as including mild to moderate learning difficulties, social, emotional and behavioral differences, medical conditions, speech differences, and mild to moderate visual/aural impairments. The school admits students with learning differences and integrates them into mainstream classes with options such as mainstream with in-class support, mainstream with withdrawal and in-class support, or mainstream with withdrawal support. The school is not equipped to educate children with moderate-to-severe learning or physical handicaps. Learning support includes accommodations, modifications, differentiated instruction, and collaboration among staff and families, with documentation through IEPs and case files. Identification procedures rely on referrals, assessments, and regular review of progress, with parent involvement and ongoing collaboration among teachers, the Head of School, Learning Support Coordinator, and other staff.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English is the language of instruction. EAL learning support consists of four extra classes per week, with in-class support to maximize language use in meaningful contexts. Guided Reading and Project Time support English development, and all teachers act as language teachers, providing bilingual guidance. Mother-tongue support is promoted, with Russian offered as a native language and arrangements available to add other mother-tongue courses when requested. Latvian Studies are taught to all students (three hours per week) to support integration into Latvian society. English is the language of instruction, and English, Russian, and Latvian are offered as independent language courses to strengthen language proficiency.

Mental Wellbeing

The school provides an emotionally and physically safe learning environment to support student well-being. Learning support addresses social and emotional needs, including support for emotional difficulties, with collaboration between the Head of School, Learning Support Coordinator, and School Counselor. Regular communication with parents and the development of Individual Education Plans contribute to students' well-being and personal growth.

Safeguarding

The school aims to provide a safe and supportive learning environment, with safeguarding as a core concern. It emphasizes informing parents and involving outside agencies or resources when appropriate to meet student needs and remove barriers to learning. The policy also highlights inclusive practices and emphasizes emotional and physical safety within the learning environment.
