ACS began in 1905 as the Faculty School on Bliss Street in Hamra, serving SPC faculty children with the goal of following the course of American public schools. In the 1910s it expanded to include children of American missionaries, and in 1921 it was renamed the American Community School at Beirut with representation on the governing board. ACS was the first school in Lebanon to offer the International Baccalaureate program in 1995. In 2015 ACS completed its first post-Civil War construction project, including faculty housing, the Beit Salim head of school apartment, 5th grade classrooms, music and band rooms, and in 2018 inaugurated Lebanon's largest solar panel installation on campus. In 2023 ACS became the first school in the MENA region to introduce Harkness Learning.
The ACS community is a tight-knit collection of families, students, faculty and staff, all working together to form a supportive and joyful school environment. Parent Volunteers plan, sponsor and host events such as Splash Fest, the Winter Holiday Carnival, Fright Night, and fundraising efforts, and parents can be involved as Classroom or Grade-Level Parents or as members of the elected Parents' Committee. The school fosters student well-being and class cohesion through a Social and Emotional Learning Program, student retreats, advisory groups and themed activities. Faculty and staff are supported through school-sponsored professional development programming and social gatherings to recognize dedication and achievement.
An elected Parents' Committee coordinates parent involvement. A dedicated group of Parent Volunteers plans, sponsors and hosts Splash Fest, the Winter Holiday Carnival, Fright Night, and fundraising efforts. Parents may participate as Classroom or Grade-Level Parents, as guest speakers or presenters at student events, or as members of the Parents' Committee. These parent involvement opportunities support the ACS community and contribute to school life.
