Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Established in 1873, Brummana High School was founded by Theophilus Waldmeier, a German-Swiss missionary, after earlier work by Elijah G. Saleeby. Education at Brummana High School was based on the principles of the Society of Friends (Quakers), emphasizing non-violence, equality, service and high standards, with the belief that there is something of God in every individual. By 1902 Brummana High School became co-educational. The school endured conflicts and governance changes through the Ottoman era and Lebanon's civil conflicts, with the British Quakers transferring management to a local board in 1985 and later resuming oversight in 1998, while also hosting refugees. Developments since then included refurbishments and new facilities, including a 3,180 m2 extension in 2014 and ongoing campus upgrades.

Community

The school has a warm, supportive, diverse global community. The warm and inclusive environment is complemented by a well-established, multi-national boarding section for boys and girls. The motto 'I Serve' reflects the community's values and its emphasis on service to others.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parents' Association (PA) is a volunteer group of parents elected for three years to represent all parents and coordinate with the school on student matters. It organises activities and events to raise funds for Financial Aid (Bursary) and to improve facilities. Members serve as sub-committee members or class representatives for each grade level and welcome suggestions from parents. The executive officers include a President, Vice President and Secretary, with several sub-committees for education, development, sports and events, communications, fundraising, and environment and health.

Brummana High School is a long-standing non-profit day and boarding school in Lebanon with a British Quaker heritage dating back to 1873. Serving students aged 3 to 18, it offers two main curricula: the Lebanese Programme leading to the Lebanese Baccalaureate and the International Programme, which culminates in IGCSE (Grade 10), AS Level (Grade 11) and A Level (Grade 12), with the option for students to transfer into the International Baccalaureate Programme after Grade 10. The language of instruction is English, with Arabic and French taught as second languages. The 15-acre campus features historic spaces such as the Meeting House alongside modern facilities including a robotics lab and updated classrooms. The High School International Programme is accredited by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, the Educational Development Trust and the International Baccalaureate Organization, and Brummana is a Cambridge International School accredited by CELFA. The school upholds Quaker values of non-violence, equality and service, reinforced by a 10:1 student–teacher ratio and broad community-service opportunities.
