LFKL first opened its doors in 1962. It is a non-profit institution, governed by a board of directors primarily composed of parents of students. The school initially operated from different sites, moving to Bukit Tunku in 1983 before the first stone of its current purpose-built campus was laid in 2004, which officially opened in September 2005.
LFKL fosters a diverse school community, welcoming students from over 44 different nationalities. The school actively promotes cultural exchange and community engagement through various events throughout the academic year. These include celebrations such as the Deepavali Show, career fairs, and sports competitions within the AEFE network like the Coupe De Volleyball Inter-Ligues.
LFKL also participates as a partner in major cultural events like "Le French Festival," an annual celebration of French language and cultures in Malaysia, featuring film, music, family activities, and gastronomy.
The school's Parent Teacher Association is known as APEKL (Association de Parents d'Élèves de Kuala Lumpur), a non-profit association dedicated to supporting LFKL families. APEKL acts as a vital link between parents, the school administration, and governing bodies, representing parents' interests in various school committees. APEKL is actively involved in organizing school events and festivities, such as the carnival, and supporting student projects. Parents are encouraged to join APEKL, which is free, and can volunteer for activities like yearbook projects or by becoming class delegates.
