Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school fosters social and emotional learning through their "Learning First" philosophy, which encourages students to build confidence, resilience, and collaboration skills. Pastoral care is a key component, with form tutors in each class responsible for monitoring the academic, personal, and co-curricular development of their students and maintaining strong relationships with families. The school's Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum further supports students' emotional intelligence and well-being.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Straits International School Rawang provides support for students with some special educational needs, although it is not a specialist SEN institution. The school states that it offers "extensive learning support for students who have special education needs" and can create Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) for students following an assessment by a registered educational psychologist.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school has a well-defined English as an Additional Language (EAL) program to support students who are not native English speakers. This program is led by native-speaking teachers and is tiered to offer different levels of support. Students can receive intensive EAL lessons that run alongside the main curriculum, focusing on developing their reading, writing, and speaking skills based on the Cambridge English curriculum

Mental Wellbeing

The school supports student mental wellbeing through its pastoral care system and a variety of targeted initiatives. Each class has a form tutor who monitors students' personal and academic progress, and the school has a counsellor who provides individual and group support. Initiatives to promote positive mental health include friendship circles to develop social-emotional skills, mental health and wellbeing talks, and access to a school counsellor through a hall pass system in primary and walk-ins in secondary.

Safeguarding

The school has a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and all staff undergo regular training to identify and report any concerns. Security measures include on-site medical support, first aid training for all staff, trained security personnel at all entrances and exits, and CCTV surveillance. Thorough background checks are conducted on all new staff members.
