SISKL was founded in 2008, initially as a secondary school. It started with a first cohort of 25 students, establishing itself as Malaysia's only international school at the time to offer the Canadian school curriculum.
In January 2023, the Sunway City Kuala Lumpur campus relocated to a new 8-acre, GreenRE-certified purpose-built facility designed to accommodate up to 3,000 students. SIS is part of the Sunway Education Group, which is owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. This unique ownership structure means that surpluses are reinvested into the institutions, supporting scholarships and enhancing educational quality.
The school fosters a vibrant and diverse community, comprising students from over 50 nationalities, along with teachers, staff, and parents. This multicultural environment enriches the learning experience and promotes global understanding. The community actively participates in various school events throughout the year, including cultural celebrations like International Day. These events, along with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities across arts, academics, and athletics, are designed to foster growth, teamwork, confidence, and collaboration among students.
The school has an active Parent Council, a group of volunteer parents who work to strengthen the bond between students, parents, and school staff. The council values parent engagement in student academic performance, personal development, and school improvement through various activities. The Parent Council also organizes community-building events such as Teacher's Day Appreciation sessions and New Parent Meet & Greet sessions, aiming to create a supportive and collaborative "big family" atmosphere within the school.
