Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school prioritizes student wellbeing through robust pastoral care. Key provisions include a House system with dedicated House Leaders and Tutors to foster belonging and celebrate achievements. A Student Buddy system ensures new students feel instantly welcomed. Daily check-ins with teachers or tutors provide a stable point of contact for students. The school also has a qualified School Counsellor available and emphasizes a "Choose Respect Charter" for guiding expected behavior.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

While not a specialist SEN school, Tenby considers applications from students with special educational needs on a case-by-case basis. The evaluation process involves an interview with the SEN Counselor or Head of School and a trial class to assess the student's needs and the school's capacity to support them.

This individualized approach ensures that any support provided aligns with the school's resources and the student's requirements. The school aims to accommodate a range of learning needs, provided they can be met within the existing educational framework.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school's English & EAL Department offers tailored English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, designed to meet individual language proficiency levels. They use globally recognized assessments like the Oxford English Test and Password EAL Assessment to determine needs. The goal is for all students to achieve at least B2 proficiency in English, and the program includes bespoke induction with intensive and targeted support.

Mental Wellbeing

Student wellbeing is a key focus, supported by a robust pastoral care system. This includes a House system with dedicated leaders and tutors, a Student Buddy system, and daily check-ins. A qualified School Counsellor is available for support, and the school promotes a "Choose Respect Charter" to guide student behaviour.

Safeguarding

Tenby Schools has a comprehensive Group Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy. This policy outlines procedures for responding to concerns about a child's welfare, preventing unsuitable people from working with children, and ensuring children's safety and wellbeing. The policy is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect best practices in child protection.
