St Edward's College was founded in 1929 on the site of the Cottonera Military Hospital, as a boys' boarding school supported by Baroness Strickland and the Countess della Catena to fill the gap left by the departure of the English Jesuits and the closure of St Ignatius College in 1908. It opened with 29 students, and a chapel was established in a former powder magazine in 1935. During World War II the College relocated to Mdina for safety before returning to Cottonera, with post-war developments including a new science block opened in 1967. The Junior School began in the late 1970s and a Kindergarten/Nursery was added in 2007; a modern sports complex followed in 2013-2014. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme was introduced at Sixth Form and the College moved to co-education, now fully co-educational; in December 2024 it announced a move to full co-education starting in September 2025.
St Edward's College places strong emphasis on character formation, intercultural understanding, and leadership to help students contribute to society. The college provides a vibrant community with a pastoral ethos and extensive co-curricular opportunities. Dwardu's Scoops is the monthly College Newsletter, sharing activities and events and featuring Old Edwardians. The college engages in forward-thinking programs such as LIFENAT, an Erasmus+ project focusing on outdoor learning, wellbeing, and environmental responsibility, and uses English as the language of instruction.
St Edward's College is a private, not-for-profit day and boarding school in Malta for ages 2 to 18. The school moved to full co-education in September 2025. The campus features the Old Magazine chapel, a sports complex with a gym, and facilities for the Junior School such as a Library, Art Room, Music Room, Drama Room and ICT Lab. Boarding offers twin or single rooms with three meals daily, and boarders access sports and recreation within main campus. Live-ins and international trips, including visits to Sicily, Paris and London, enrich the curriculum.
