Opened in 1928 to provide English-language education for Monterrey families, ASFM began on September 3, 1928 with 57 students in grades 1–10 and soon became a Private Civil Society under Mexican law. In 1944, the American School Foundation of Monterrey was established to transform ASFM into a nonprofit institution. Enrollment grew to 450 by 1956, and a Río Missouri campus opened in 1958. A modern campus near Huasteca Canyon opened in the 1990s, with Middle and High School moving there in 1996 and all grades on site by 2010. Today ASFM serves over 2,400 students on a 212,000 m² campus and has more than 12,000 alumni.
Center for Community Engagement connects ASFM high school students with the heartbeat of the local community. It partners with over 20 organizations across education, environmental conservation, healthcare, and social development, including Nuevo Amanecer, Caritas, Musica del Corazon, Mas Utiles, Cardio Chavitos, Casa Monarca, Cruz Rosa, DIF NL, La Gran Familia, Parque Chipinque - Mantenimiento, Pronatura, Soñar Despierto, Regalando Estrellas, Techo NL, and Zona 85. The program seeks to transform service through meaningful experiences that deepen students' understanding of local issues and civic responsibility.
The Parent Association uses the strength of the parent community to support the school's administration in building community and promoting student well-being.
ASFM is a private, secular, nonprofit international day school for ages 3–18. It offers an American Curriculum with AP courses, aligned to Common Core English Language Arts and Math, Next Generation Science Standards, SHAPE America for PE, National Core Arts Standards for music and visual arts, and CASEL for social-emotional learning. The 212,000-square-meter campus in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León serves Elementary, Middle, and High School in distinct spaces, with ongoing renovations. A 1-to-1 laptop program supports learning, and the MSHS Library provides more than 17,483 items plus production studios and digital resources. The school opened in 1928 and now serves about 2,400 students, with a modern campus near Huasteca Canyon since the 1990s. ASFM emphasizes service, averaging over 21,000 hours of community engagement annually (93% of students participate). Extracurricular offerings include Destination Imagination, the National Honor Society, and TEDx Youth ASFM, along with athletics such as soccer, basketball, and track.
