How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

ASFM provides social-emotional learning through a dedicated counseling program. The Middle School Counseling Team supports students in grades 6–8 with both individual and group counseling to meet developmental, preventative, and remedial needs. Counselors provide crisis intervention and guidance, but do not offer long-term therapy. The counseling program designs instruction aligned with American School Counseling Association standards and SEL plans to support students' current needs. SEL competencies include understanding and managing emotions, setting and achieving positive goals, empathy, establishing positive relationships, and making responsible decisions. The High School Counseling program emphasizes social-emotional growth, college readiness, and a comprehensive counseling framework.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Center for Personalized Learning offers specialized opportunities to expand learning experiences. It fosters individual excellence by supporting students' talents and interests and tailors experiences to meet the needs of students who require additional support or seek greater academic challenges. The CPL provides a broad range of options, including arts, athletics, and language offerings such as French, to complement core instruction. These programs are designed to accommodate diverse learner profiles and to extend opportunities beyond the standard curriculum.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The primary language of instruction is English. Spanish is taught as one of the five core subjects. The school describes itself as operating with English-language instruction complemented by Spanish language study as part of the core program, indicating a bilingual orientation within the curriculum. This bilingual framework supports multilingual learning as part of the core program. English-language instruction is the foundational language across grade levels with Spanish integrated as a core subject.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is supported through ASFM's counseling services. Counselors provide individual and group counseling to address developmental, preventative, and remedial needs and are trained to deliver responsive services and crisis intervention. Counseling follows SEL plans aligned with recognized student standards to support ongoing wellbeing and success. The Wellbeing Department, including a Wellbeing Department Assistant, provides dedicated resources for student wellbeing and offers clear points of contact for students and families.

Safeguarding

ASFM provides an anonymous reporting mechanism (ASFMHELP) to safeguard students and address concerns promptly. School counselors offer crisis intervention and support as part of safeguarding services, and there are established pathways to maintain a safe learning environment. The HS Counseling page documents Social Emotional Learning and Services alongside reporting channels, reinforcing safeguarding structures. A Child Protection Policy is listed in Admissions resources, underscoring the safeguarding framework and policies in place for the school community. ASFM is a private, secular, nonprofit international day school for ages 3–18. It offers an American Curriculum with AP courses, aligned to Common Core English Language Arts and Math, Next Generation Science Standards, SHAPE America for PE, National Core Arts Standards for music and visual arts, and CASEL for social-emotional learning. The 212,000-square-meter campus in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León serves Elementary, Middle, and High School in distinct spaces, with ongoing renovations. A 1-to-1 laptop program supports learning, and the MSHS Library provides more than 17,483 items plus production studios and digital resources. The school opened in 1928 and now serves about 2,400 students, with a modern campus near Huasteca Canyon since the 1990s. ASFM emphasizes service, averaging over 21,000 hours of community engagement annually (93% of students participate). Extracurricular offerings include Destination Imagination, the National Honor Society, and TEDx Youth ASFM, along with athletics such as soccer, basketball, and track.
