Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Colegio Americano de Tabasco was founded on September 7, 1985, by a group of education professionals who aimed to offer a continuous, comprehensive, humanistic education centered on the student to develop analytical and critical thinking in an environment of respect and freedom. The Kindergarten opened with 29 students in a downtown house, with a founding faculty led by the Director of Pre-school Laura Violeta Heredia Escobar, among others. The Primary School was established in 1986, the Secondary School opened in 1991–1992, and the Bachillerato (high school) in 1994. Today CAT has about 2,000 students and 311 staff, and has graduated 10,424 students to date across all levels. The school collaborates with ITESM to develop thinking skills and, since 2002, offers postgraduate studies to teachers and staff through ITESM's Virtual University, with courses, workshops, and conferences broadcast via satellite and Internet.

Colégio Americano de Tabasco offers a bespoke curriculum for ages 3 to 16 within a school with ties to international education. In kindergarten, students follow a competency-based, constructivist preschool program aligned with Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública, while English as a foreign language program with bicultural activities is supported by English language lab and multimedia tools. Primary education in Spanish follows SEP subjects and emphasizes project-based competencies; the school is part of UNO International System, with alliances including Apple, Discovery, and UNESCO exchanges. Classrooms are digital and wireless, with iPads for Spanish and English work, Music Room, and a CREA site to underpin project work. The Cambridge English pathway leads to Starters, Movers, and KET, and there is an alliance with International House Mexico for teacher development and four-skill assessment. Extracurriculars include maker activities, environmental programs, sport, and arts program, with a focus on well-being and community involvement for all.
