Founded in 1911 as the German School in Puebla by German families, the Colegio Humboldt Puebla began with ten students and a German teacher. In 1913 the school moved to a new location, and by 1918 English instruction was introduced as the school grew; Dr. Hugo Leicht became director in 1920. From 1940 to 1943, Kindergarten through Preparatory classes were taught in German, and during World War II the school continued operating and later moved to a larger campus funded with support from the German government and Volkswagen, adopting the Humboldt name. In 1984 the institution transformed from a German S. de R.L. into Colegio Humboldt A.C. and established a Board of Directors; since then it has expanded its bicultural program and international collaborations, including BUAP's accreditation of the Preparatory program in 1954 and later quality initiatives such as ISO 9001.
Academic exchanges with Germany are a central part of the Humboldt community, focusing on language immersion and cultural understanding. Exchanges typically last about six months, with the school assisting in host-family placement and required formalities. Family Day events bring parents and students together for activities such as parent-child soccer tournaments, and parents participate through the Padres de Familia network with Escuela para Padres offering workshops and conferences. Alumni events are held on campus, and the school maintains an alumni network.
Padres de Familia are part of the Humboldt community and engage in school life through the Padres de Familia network. The school provides a dedicated family portal for communications with Padres de Familia. Escuela para Padres offers workshops, courses, and conferences to involve families in education. Notices for families are shared through Avisos clasificados, a space for notices to parents, teachers, and staff. An alumni network and alumni events support community-building, including campus alumni gatherings. The Dia de la Familia Humboldt includes family-oriented events and sports.
Colégio Humboldt Puebla is a bicultural German–Mexican school for ages 0 to 18 that participates in the German Auslandsschulnetz. The curriculum blends a German-based program with a bespoke local curriculum and a tri-lingual approach to Spanish, German, and English. In Primary, German is the first foreign language, and Mathematics and Science are taught in German; English becomes the second foreign language in grade three. The school weaves Mexican customs with German-European traditions, supported by German-speaking teachers who reinforce immersion. For students entering Primary with no German knowledge, leveling classes in small groups provide a one-year transition to full participation. The campus offers extensive after‑school workshops in music, theatre, arts, and sports, plus dedicated sports academies. Facilities include a large athletics complex, modern science laboratories, a new Kindergarten/Primary area, and, in 2024, padel and pickleball courts. CEPAL supports pedagogical training, and intercultural exchanges with Germany enrich language skills and cultural understanding.
