Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

HSV International Primary School delivers a full English-language primary curriculum with IPC integration. The IPC framework provides a brain-friendly environment and an international-minded approach underpinning learning, with mileposts ID1–ID6 guiding progression. The Literacy and Mathematics curricula follow England's National Curriculum, with The Power of Reading and White Rose supporting reading, writing and numeracy. The school aims to develop independent thinkers and problem solvers in a safe environment while fostering global citizenship and lifelong learning; the Dutch and International Departments operate within the Dutch educational system with positive inspectorate reports and highly qualified staff. The HSV is part of Stichting Haagsche Schoolvereeniging, a foundation that oversees eight schools in The Hague.

Arts and Creative

Music, Expressive Art and Physical Education are a major focus. All pupils have a minimum of one lesson per week in music, handicraft and gym. From year two these lessons are delivered by specialist teachers. Music and gym lessons are taught in Dutch in NSL to increase opportunities to learn and use the Dutch language.

Cultural and Language

Most HSV students speak or hear other languages at home and learn English as a second or third language. English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is provided to help new learners access the curriculum, with withdrawal sessions and in‑class support as needed. The school actively encourages home-language maintenance with additive bilingualism. Host Country, Culture and Language (HCCL) lessons connect pupils with Dutch culture and language, with three Dutch lessons per week and translanguaging to support comprehension; HCCL focuses on learning Dutch in cultural context and uses the European Framework of Reference for Languages to benchmark progress.

Social and Hobbies

The IPC goals and the Jigsaw personal goals form a core part of the social and emotional curriculum. Pupils develop traits such as adaptability, communication, collaboration, empathy, ethics, resilience, respect and thinking skills; activities focus on collaboration, problem-solving and social interaction through IPC topics and related goals.

Leadership and Professional

Executive Director of HSV International Primary School is Ingrid La Haye. The HSV is part of the Haagsche Schoolvereeniging foundation, which runs eight schools, with governance including a Supervisory Board and a Joint Participation Council. The school seeks out quality teachers from around the world and invests in ongoing professional development; recruitment materials indicate a collaborative, global approach and strong parent partnerships. Head of School for the VNS location is Kay Wilson.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The curriculum places emphasis on Music, Expressive Art and Physical Education, with at least one weekly lesson; specialty teachers teach these subjects from Year 2 onward. HSV offers After School & Holiday Care through external providers, with care available from end of the day until 18:30 and options for holidays; care details and partner providers are listed. The Hague location offers cultural engagement and outdoor recreation opportunities as part of life in The Hague.

Situated in the Benoordenhout area of The Hague, the HSV International Primary School's VNS location is housed in an authentic 1920s building that retains many of its original art-deco features. The school teaches a structured program based on the UK National Curriculum for Literacy and Mathematics, combined with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), ensuring subjects like science, geography, and art are taught through engaging, interdisciplinary units. A distinguishing feature of the VNS location is its size; it is the largest of HSV’s international branches, accommodating up to 280 pupils in classes capped at 20 students to allow for personalized, inquiry-based learning. In September 2025, the campus expanded its offerings by launching a Dutch Bilingual class, further integrating international students with the host country's culture. The VNS location provides a supportive, inclusive setting focused on developing global citizenship.
