Dutch is taught as a host country language with three Dutch lessons per week. All children have the opportunity to experience Dutch culture and language through Host Country, Culture and Language (HCCL) lessons. English is taught as an additional language with EAL support, and home languages are maintained with translanguaging. The European Framework of Reference for Languages is used to benchmark progress in Dutch.
Most HSV pupils speak or hear other languages at home and learn English as a second or third language. EAL support helps students access the curriculum, with short withdrawal sessions or in-class support, and progress tracked on an EAL continuum. Dutch is taught as the host country language with three Dutch lessons per week, and Host Country, Culture and Language (HCCL) lessons are available for those who can access the ID curriculum. Translanguaging is used to support comprehension, and the school follows an additive bilingualism approach by maintaining home languages rather than replacing them.
Situated in the Benoordenhout area of The Hague, the HSV International Primary School's VNS location is housed in an authentic 1920s building that retains many of its original art-deco features. The school teaches a structured program based on the UK National Curriculum for Literacy and Mathematics, combined with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), ensuring subjects like science, geography, and art are taught through engaging, interdisciplinary units. A distinguishing feature of the VNS location is its size; it is the largest of HSV’s international branches, accommodating up to 280 pupils in classes capped at 20 students to allow for personalized, inquiry-based learning. In September 2025, the campus expanded its offerings by launching a Dutch Bilingual class, further integrating international students with the host country's culture. The VNS location provides a supportive, inclusive setting focused on developing global citizenship.
