The school has interschool competitions in debating and chess. The school has entries in the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, which develops collaboration, leadership and communication on stage. The school has German language exchanges and PASCH scholarships, including a Germany-New Zealand exchange program.
Instrumental Tuition is offered in Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Piano, Voice, Woodwind and Brass. John McGlashan runs two jazz groups, the Big Band and the Small Combo, which rehearse Fridays and perform at the Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival and school functions. School Production occurs every second year and an Arts Extravaganza is planned featuring drama, music, improv, slam poetry and visual art. The school has a Film Club that has created short films and won the NZ Schools Gigatown Film Competition.
DISC International Social brings international students together for socials. International Students learn in ESOL and English-language classes, with pathways to IB English Language B. German language learning and international exchanges are supported, including PASCH scholarships and the Germany-New Zealand exchange.
The school has an Improv Group - Theatresports with lunchtime sessions and a weekly Dunedin Secondary School Improv Jam. The Film Club provides opportunities for collaborative film projects and has competed in national events. DISC Socials coordinate social activities for international students.
The school has a Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) program promoting service, skill development, physical recreation and adventurous journeys. The DoE Award comprises four sections—Skills, Service, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey—with a Gold residential project. The Gold Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards Ceremony recognises student achievement. The World Challenge leadership expeditions include a trip to Borneo that is student-led and focuses on leadership and service.
The school has student leadership opportunities including the appointment of the Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefects for 2026. Leadership and career development are fostered through DoE, World Challenge and formal student leadership roles.
Outdoor Education has a long history at John McGlashan College and aims to develop an active outdoor life, self-management, resilience and service to the community. The Year 7 four-day camp is based at Berwick Lodge; Year 8 camps occur in Central Otago; Year 9 travels the Central Otago Rail Trail; Year 10 camps include challenges such as the Kepler Challenge and Temple Valley expeditions.
John McGlashan College is a state-integrated boys' secondary school in Dunedin, New Zealand, serving Years 7–13 with on-site boarding. The college offers the IB Diploma Programme alongside Learning Pathways 2024, with Years 7–8 taught in homerooms where Integrated Studies and Mathematics form a foundation; core subjects are taught by specialist teachers. Year 9 continues Integrated Studies in homerooms. Facilities include Davies' Sport Centre, the Edgar Learning Centre, Library with print and digital resources, on-site Boarding Houses (Ross House and Balmacewan House), Chapel, and a canteen.
