Queensland Academy was established in 1988 by Mrs. Adenike Lilian Akinyelure as Queensland Private School, starting in a 3-bedroom apartment in Surulere, Lagos, with five pupils, one teacher and one cleaner, delivering the Nigerian curriculum. In August 1994 the school moved to its present site at 1–5 Ebem-Oha Street, Okota, Lagos, and in October 1999 Queensland Private School became Queensland Academy in preparation for the launch of a secondary school. The secondary school began with four students and operates a Nigerian/British International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum, with examinations through WAEC and Cambridge. Queensland Academy has affiliations with the British Council as an Attached Centre, Africa Leadership Academy (ALA), AISEN, United World Colleges (UWC), JAN, AISA, Best Buddies International (BBI), and APEN, and is recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC. The organization continues to evolve and maintain its ideologies while addressing present challenges.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Akinyelure, Queensland Academy has flourished with a culture of excellence and integrity. The school emphasizes cultural heritage and offers enriching excursions, including a four-day visit to meet the Ooni of Ife. International affiliations include the British Council as an Attached Centre and partnerships with Africa Leadership Academy, AISEN, UWC, JAN, AISA, BBI, and APEN. Gifted learners receive inclusive education with personalized learning pathways and on-site counseling, alongside robust co-curricular activities.
Queensland Academy is a Nigerian–British day and boarding school for ages 1 to 16. It offers a blended curriculum that includes EYFS, Montessori, Cambridge Primary, Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge Secondary, and Cambridge A Levels, along with a curriculum. The secondary program follows a Nigerian/British IGCSE framework and incorporates Cambridge Checkpoint, WAEC SSCE, and BECE examinations.
