Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

ABIS was established by Sohar Aluminium to meet the demand for high-quality international education in Sohar. It first opened in a villa near the airport before relocating to its current five-hectare, purpose-built campus. ABIS was the first and only international school in Sohar authorized to offer all three IB programmes, creating a full IB continuum. In January 2017 ABIS became an independent entity jointly owned by Sohar Aluminium and OQ, strengthening its governance. The school has since expanded its facilities and achieved CIS accreditation, including reaccreditation in 2023, reinforcing its international standards.

Community

ABIS enjoys strong community support from local stakeholders and its corporate partners. The school offers a broad set of community activities, including Eco Club projects, annual beach cleanups, and Model United Nations participation, with events reaching Muscat, Qatar, and even St Petersburg. ABIS's annual Sports Day is hosted by Sohar Aluminium and regularly draws hundreds of students, teachers, and parents. Parents and families engage with school life through attendance at events and collaborative community initiatives supported by ABIS's board and supporters.

Parent-Teacher Association

A formal Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is not publicly described in ABIS's official materials. Parent involvement appears to be organized through participation in school events and governance led by the ABIS board, which is supported by Sohar Aluminium and OQ. ABIS's Sports Day is a major event that includes active involvement from parents, with attendance and even parent participation in races, and it is hosted by Sohar Aluminium on its grounds. Community activities organized by ABIS mothers, such as Omani Women's Day celebrations, illustrate active parent-led engagement in local events. The school maintains strong governance with two shareholder partners and a board that includes representatives from Sohar Aluminium and OQ, underscoring a shared commitment to the school's community. ABIS also supports parent participation in student activities like Eco Club and Model United Nations, which involve volunteers and event participation beyond classroom hours.
