Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Aitchison College began as Punjab Chief's College on 2 January 1886, tracing its origins to the Wards School in Umballa (Ambala), founded in 1868 to educate princes and wards of the Court of Wards. The foundation stone for the current site was laid on 3 November 1886 by the Earl of Dufferin and Ava, and the college was renamed Aitchison College on 13 November 1886 in honor of Sir Charles Umpherston Aitchison. Construction of the Old Building began in 1887 and was completed by 1890. In 1936 the Cambridge curriculum was introduced at Aitchison, and since then the college has expanded into a large campus on about 200 acres; in 2022 the college celebrated the 136th anniversary at the current site, and in 2026 it marks its 140th year. Today the campus covers about 200 acres and serves boys aged 5–18 across Junior, Prep, and Senior divisions, under a succession of more than eighteen principals.

Community

The college is organized into three divisions—Junior School, Prep School, and Senior School—serving boys aged 5 to 18, with both day scholars and boarding pupils housed in a house system. There are more than twenty clubs and societies across the three schools, including Debating, Model United Nations, Geography, Science, Economics, German, Environment, Dramatics, and Music, among others. Community events include Founders' Day, annual flower shows, and a range of sports tournaments, with Founders' Day 2026 listed on the school's News & Events page. The college maintains an active alumni network through Aitchison Connect and the Old Boys Association, with alumni involvement visible in events, publications, and donor activity.

Parent-Teacher Association

A formal Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is not publicly documented on the college site; parent engagement is coordinated through governance channels and the Old Boys Association. The Board of Governors oversees governance, strategy, and major fundraising initiatives. The Aitchison College Old Boys Association (ACOBA), established in 1905, connects alumni with current students and the College, and organises reunions and alumni-led events. The college maintains Aitchison Connect, an alumni portal to facilitate ongoing engagement with former students. Fundraising and donor programs include the Aitchison Annual Giving Program and the Langlands' Fund, with donors recognised at college events and in communications. Founders' Day and other events involve parents and the wider community through the Old Boys network and alumni activities.
