With a forward-looking vision, Alpamayo for boys and Salcantay for girls were founded in the same year. The Alpamayo seed dates to 1973, when Manuel Fontes de Albornoz introduced family orientation work and a group of Opus Dei families promoted personalized education. In 1985 it was decided to create two schools and reinforce parental involvement, and land at Monterrico's Pinerolo was acquired. Construction began January 2, 1987, classes started April 6, 1987, and Alpamayo opened as an experimental bilingual program. The Solidaridad program began in 1994 to support charitable work, and in 1999 the school moved to a larger Ate campus; since 2011 the school has pursued internationalization and competency-based education, with bilingualism above 50% of the curriculum and more than 20% of students studying abroad, while the International Baccalaureate program began in 2012.
The school community includes active parent involvement through established parent associations. Parents participate in trips, catechesis, retreats, and performances as part of school life. Formación de Padres provides conferences with national and international speakers on family topics, an Open Day for parents, semiannual parent training days, and induction for first-year parents. Family involvement is integrated into Alpamayo's educational approach.
Parent associations were established as the school grew. They organize trips, catechesis, and retreats, as well as performances. Open lines of communication and participation in school life were part of governance as leadership passed to the Director General. Parent councils helped shape the school's culture. Formación de Padres strengthens parents as first educators through conferences and inductions for new families. Parental partnership remains essential to student development.
