Admissions Process

Welcome to the German-Polish Encounter School Willy-Brandt-Schule in Warsaw. Discover our educational offerings. The German-Polish Encounter School Willy-Brandt-Schule in Warsaw (WBS) belongs to the 140 German overseas schools and was founded in 1978 as the embassy school “German School Warsaw.” From the beginnings with two teachers, one kindergarten teacher, and ten students, it has grown into a school with over 400 students, 80 kindergarten children, 20 educators, and 60 teachers. Today, Willy-Brandt-Schule Warsaw includes the kindergarten, the primary school, and the secondary levels I and II. The Willy-Brandt-Schule is staffed and funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and is the only German overseas school in Poland that offers an educational pathway corresponding to the German education system. Native-speaking foreign staff and highly qualified local teachers ensure “Education Made in Germany,” i.e., instruction according to German curricula at the highest level. The certificate “Excellent German Overseas School,” awarded to the WBS by the Federal Republic of Germany, is a testament to our successful work. Education according to German standards and the promotion of German-Polish dialogue and intercultural understanding are the essential foundations of our work in all parts of the school. Respect and tolerance regardless of cultural differences are also reasons for our steadily growing student numbers. Since 2005, the WBS has operated on the basis of the German-Polish School Agreement and has since been an educational-political institution of both countries. Thus, the Willy-Brandt-Schule in Warsaw is a joint German-Polish encounter school. The curriculum at our school corresponds to the German general education system: primary school, Hauptschule, Realschule, and Gymnasium. As an encounter school, the WBS aims to lead its students—primarily German and Polish—to recognized qualifications. The focus is on Hochschulreife, i.e., the ability to study at a German, Polish, or international university after completing WBS. Applicants coming from the WBS are treated the same as domestic applicants. A language examination is not required. The path to the educational goal can be taken on two levels: entering the German-language program area or entering the Polish-language program area (the so-called International Department), in which German language skills are gradually acquired and expanded up to the German-mother-tongue Abitur examination. All taught subjects follow the German Abitur requirements according to Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia curricula. In addition, we place emphasis on substantial practical components in science education, the development of musically artistic abilities (e.g., in the WBS Music Academy), the cultivation of athletic qualities (e.g., in the WBS Football Academy or athletics training), and a scientific cooperation with the University of Warsaw (expected January 2017). Vocationally, teaching is expanded through internships, career-advancement events, trips to Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), and visits to the Federal Employment Agency in Berlin. Our after-school care offers a wide range of additional activities. Our playrooms are open until 6:00 p.m., and children have the opportunity to participate in sports, artistic, musical, technical, and other clubs. Here you can find our WBS video. This film informs about the school's orientation and about the offerings of the school's music and football academies.

Willy-Brandt-Schule Warschau is a German-Polish encounter school in Warsaw, funded and staffed by the Federal Republic of Germany. It serves children aged 3 to 18, with a kindergarten, primary school and secondary levels I and II. The curriculum follows German general education standards and Abitur requirements based on Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia curricula. Two educational pathways are offered: a German-language program and the Polish-language 'Internationale Abteilung' where German language skills are built gradually toward the Abitur. The school is the only German Auslandsschule in Poland offering a German-system education. Instruction is delivered by native German-speaking staff and qualified local teachers. Since 2005 it operates under the Deutsch-Polnisches Schulabkommen as a joint educational institution. Notable features include practical science components, the WBS Music Academy, and athletic development through a Football Academy. A scientific cooperation with the University of Warsaw supports inquiry, internships and career events; after-school care provides a range of activities.
