Deutsche Schule Porto is operated by the Deutsche Schulverein zu Porto, a non-profit association based at Rua Guerra Junqueiro, 162, 4150-386 Porto. The association's purpose is the maintenance and operation of a general-education school, including a kindergarten, with the aim of familiarizing young people of foreign and German nationality with the languages and cultural contents of Portuguese and German culture, and to promote personal encounters among students, parents, and teachers of different nations. The school's governance is arranged by the Schulverein Vorstand with involvement of the German Foreign Office and the German overseas representation. The school has existed for more than 120 years and offers bilingual education from kindergarten through the International Abitur. In 2025, the DSP celebrated its 125-year anniversary.
The DSP lives through a cooperative community where parents are active co-designers of daily school life. Parents are elected from year groups to bring concerns, suggestions and feedback to school development in constructive, transparent dialogue with the school leadership and faculty. PTA members meet regularly, organize events, advise on pedagogical questions and accompany school projects. They act as a bridge between parents and the school, always with the children's best interests in mind. Volunteer involvement appears in festivals, in the library, at the Saint Martin's Day parade, in the school garden and in working groups.
