DESS was established in 1971 as a primary school catering for British expatriates in Doha. The junior school opened in February 1979 in a ceremony attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani. The Emir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is a DESS alumnus. DESS maintains strong links with the British Embassy, distinguishing it as one of two schools in Qatar with such affiliations. It is the sole not-for-profit preparatory school in Qatar and offers education up to Year 8, with membership in the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS).
The DESS community is described as family-oriented and nurturing, with a welcoming environment for students aged 3–13. The school fosters family and community involvement through regular events, tours, and open days. The student body comprises over 40 nationalities, with a significant British presence. Alumni engage with current students through guest speakers and assemblies, and alumni events are encouraged.
DESS has a formal Parent Council within its governance, chaired by Zaina Al Kanaan. Parent governors and parent representatives participate in board discussions and policy oversight. A British Embassy representative sits on the board, reflecting external engagement with the school. The Parent Council and governance structure provide channels for parent involvement in school life and decision-making. The Alumni community engages with current students through guest speakers and assemblies, and alumni events are organized to connect former pupils with the school. Examples of alumni engagement include the 2025 Alumni Gathering and other alumni-led events.
