ISME opened in September 2008 in Doha, founded in collaboration with Dr. Ibrahim Al Naimi, starting with 38 students. In 2009 the school earned U.S. accreditation and Qatar accreditation. The first graduation occurred in 2011, with a yearbook highlighting a class of 15 seniors. The graduates achieved a 100% graduation rate and 100% acceptance to universities and colleges, with graduates going on to institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Qatar, and Canada (including Penn State, Georgetown, UT Austin, Weill Cornell, Texas A&M, and Qatar University School of Law). By 2016–17 enrollment grew to about 300 students in grades 7–12, and MOEHE designated the school as one of five Outstanding Private Schools in Qatar in 2016.
ISME positions itself as a premier multicultural institution that offers an American-style curriculum while nurturing local customs and culture. The school community is described as diverse and globally oriented, reflecting its mission to prepare students for global study and careers. The ISME community hosts a range of events that highlight cultural diversity and national traditions, including International Day celebrations, Qatar National Day events, Garangao celebrations, Family Fun Day, and National Sports Day.
The PTA is the Parent Teacher Association of the school and is represented by an Executive Committee made up of parents and guardians of students. Its purposes are to support the school's mission, vision, values, and programs; facilitate positive communication between the school and parents; and encourage participation and collaboration across the school community. The Executive Committee comprises a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Communications Coordinator, Events Coordinator, and Past President, with elections organized by the school administration and followed by an orientation for new leaders. General Association Meetings are held at least twice a year, with a quorum-based process for decisions. The PTA may raise funds through social, cultural, or sporting events, all of which require pre-approval by the School, and such funds are deposited with the School's finance office; a final financial statement and budget are closed at the year's end. The PTA operates under the School's auspices, and communications with outside agencies or the community are coordinated with the School. Resources available to parents through the PTA include Uniform Guidelines and the Student Handbook.
