Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Wellbeing at Newton International School Lagoon is at the heart of the school culture. The wellbeing approach promotes emotional literacy, resilience, and positive relationships through daily practice, pastoral care, and community engagement. It aims to support every pupil to feel valued, supported, and able to thrive. The framework is designed to develop confident, compassionate global citizens who demonstrate respect, integrity, and empathy in all aspects of school life. Wellbeing is embedded across daily life and school activities, reflecting the school's commitment to holistic student development.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Newton International School Lagoon provides Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision within a mainstream school setting. The SEN policy defines SEN as difficulties in learning that require additional support across cognition and learning, physical and sensory, behavioural, emotional and social, and communication and interaction development. The school has a SEN Teacher and Learning Support Teacher who lead the SEN Team and coordinate provision; the policy describes these roles and does not describe a separate specialist SEN institution. A three-stage process is used to identify and support SEN pupils: Stage 1 documents concerns in class; Stage 2 provides targeted support and creates an Individual student profile or Education Plan; Stage 3 involves outside agencies if needed. A Learning Support Register is kept, and progress is tracked with individual or group plans; parents are consulted and informed. English language learning is not considered SEN, and separate educational provision is made for students with EAL.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English as an Additional Language (EAL) needs are addressed through separate provision rather than classification as SEN. The SEN policy explicitly states that a child is not regarded as having SEN solely because English is not their first language, and that separate educational provision is made for those with EAL. Baseline testing and ongoing assessment are used to screen and inform language support decisions. The policy does not specify dedicated EAL staff or programmes beyond this separation.

Mental Wellbeing

Wellbeing at NIS Lagoon is at the heart of the school culture. The wellbeing approach promotes emotional literacy, resilience, and positive relationships through daily practice, pastoral care, and community engagement. This framework aims to ensure every pupil feels valued, supported, and able to thrive. It aligns with the school's mission to develop confident, compassionate global citizens who demonstrate respect, integrity, and empathy in all aspects of school life. Wellbeing is integrated into daily school life and is a core aspect of student development.

Safeguarding

Newton International School Lagoon recognises safeguarding and child protection duties and commits to safeguarding and promoting a culture of vigilance for the welfare of all students. All staff employed by the school or volunteers have a full and active role in protecting students from harm. The school provides a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment which promotes the social, physical and emotional wellbeing of each student. The safeguarding policy is developed in line with Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. It is aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990) and CIS Code of Ethics to ensure children's rights to safety, participation, and dignity are central. A designated safeguarding lead is identified as part of the safeguarding framework.
