Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Nexus fosters Social and Emotional Learning through a tailored programme integrated alongside the academic curriculum. This includes dedicated time each week for activities and lessons focused on learners' social and emotional well-being. The school employs full-time counsellors who offer socio-emotional support across all age groups, providing a safe and supportive environment for learners. Form tutors also play a pivotal role in supporting learners by offering academic coaching and pastoral guidance, maintaining open communication between learners, staff, and parents.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Nexus is committed to an inclusive educational environment, supporting learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities. The Learning Support team provides one-to-one and small group sessions, both in and outside the classroom, to help learners fully engage with the curriculum. For learners with Special Educational Needs, personalised Learner Passports are created, equipping teachers with tailored goals, accommodations, and support strategies.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

To support learners for whom English is an additional language, Nexus offers tailored programmes to enhance language proficiency. The school provides four tiers of support: Foundation Programmes, Intensive English Support, Additional English Support, and Mainstream. Each learner undergoes an assessment during the application process to determine the appropriate level of language support, ensuring they can access the mainstream curriculum effectively.

Mental Wellbeing

Nexus places significant emphasis on the mental well-being of its learners. The school employs full-time counsellors who offer socio-emotional support across all ages, creating a safe and supportive environment. These counsellors conduct professional learning sessions for teachers, equipping them to handle learners with mental health needs and imparting self-regulation skills. The counselling team also run co-curricular activities where learners can engage in peer support and learn counselling skills, fostering a supportive community.

Safeguarding

Nexus is committed to the safety and well-being of its learners. The school has established a clear Safeguarding Policy to protect learners from maltreatment in any environment. This includes employing safer recruitment practices, defining roles and responsibilities regarding safeguarding, enforcing clear staff conduct policies, and providing transparent processes to report allegations of abuse. The policy also outlines procedures for managing and recording safeguarding concerns, ensuring a safe learning environment for all.
