Seoul Chinese Primary School was founded in 1909 by Chinese immigrants. From the 1950s through the 1970s the student body was large, around 2,000, but enrollment declined due to shifting preferences for education abroad and demographic changes, with numbers dropping to about 500 by 2008. Korean families began enrolling to learn Chinese, contributing to a revival of the school's enrollment and its role in the local overseas-Chinese community. In 2009 the school celebrated its centenary, with attendance by the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to South Korea, who pledged continued support through the Chinese embassy. Graduates from Seoul Chinese Primary School commonly progress to Seoul Overseas Chinese High School.
