English is the vehicular language of instruction and pupils are immersed in English from an early age. Spanish is taught as a curriculum subject (Spanish Language and Literature and Social Sciences); foreign students from Year 1 to Year 6 receive Spanish as a Foreign Language instruction. German is offered as a Primary language club, and French is available as an Additional Language club for Phase 3 and Secondary. English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is provided for pupils who join with limited English.
Most pupils are immersed in the English curriculum from an early age. Pupils who do not speak English join a special English program while continuing to participate in regular lessons to be exposed to English at all times. Some pupils may be withdrawn from class for extra language support when needed, and in cases of very small cohorts of non-English pupils they may receive targeted language instruction. Pupils joining in secondary may lose one year's education while acquiring the level of English necessary to access the full curriculum.
The British International School of Tenerife provides an authentic UK educational experience for students from 18 months to 18 years across its two campuses in La Luz and Los Realejos. Students follow the National Curriculum for England, working towards Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level examinations. The Secondary campus features specialized science laboratories, a dedicated computing suite, and designated spaces for art, drama, and languages. A defining feature of the school is its distinctive House system. In the primary years, Houses map to the Canary Islands' four national parks, while secondary students belong to Houses representing the four natural elements. Students earn points during inter-house competitions and weekly assemblies by demonstrating core values like kindness, honesty, and respect. Alongside strong English instruction, the curriculum heavily integrates the Spanish language, allowing students to celebrate British traditions such as St. George’s Day while meeting national requirements for Spain.
