The Deutsche Schule Las Palmas began in 1920 with seven children and one German teacher, an initiative of German families who settled on Gran Canaria. In 1967 it was officially recognized as a German Auslandsschule, and it is a Begegnungsschule that values intercultural exchange between German and Spanish culture. The school provides a bi-cultural and bilingual education, and students typically complete their schooling with both the German Abitur and the Bachillerato. In 1977 the school moved to its current Almatriche, Lomo del Drago campus with subsequent facility expansions, and in 2019 the German International Abitur was introduced. After outstanding Bund-Länder inspections, the school received the Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule designation for the third time; it celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020, hosted the German ambassador in 2022, and became a center for the Oxford Test of English in 2024.
Open Fridays for 2026/27 pre-registration take place on Friday, March 13, 2026 at 10:00. International Women's Day is celebrated, with activities prepared by the primary classes. The project Hermano Mayor, a Big Brother initiative, connects 1st and 7th graders to foster friendship and support, and this year's partnership was a great success. The school calendar lists important dates and holidays such as the Day of German Unity (October 3), Día de la Hispanidad, Día de la Inmaculada Concepción, Christmas markets, and other events throughout 2025 and 2026.
The School Association is the non-profit body that governs the Deutsche Schule Las Palmas, with members serving on a voluntary basis to manage financial, economic, and legal matters. The association acts under Spanish law and promotes friendly relations between Spain and Germany to enable intercultural exchange. Details about tasks and objectives are defined in the association's statutes. The board consists of seven elected members serving two-year terms, and an annual general meeting approves the board's work. Current board members are Alejandro Girona Ratzke (Chairman), Tatjana Willhelmi, Thorsten Pieper, Wolfram Netzband, Tilman Kuttenkeuler, Marina Morales Padrón, and Isabel León Suarez; in December 2025 Isabel León Suarez joined to fill a vacancy and Alfred Ernst left. Deutsche Schule Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a German Auslandsschule offering a bilingual education, following the KMK-approved German curriculum for ages 3–18. From kindergarten to Abitur, students learn under native-speaking teachers from Germany, Spain and England, in small classes supported by digital media. The school is affiliated with Germany and maintains German quality standards. In February 2022 Bund-Länder-Inspektion awarded the school the Exzellente Auslandsschule seal, reflecting inspection excellence. The campus combines a main building with a garden, a separate classroom building, a library, an auditorium and a cafeteria; the primary school has its own courtyard. Facilities include a sports hall, an athletics track and multiple fields, set in a natural environment about 10 minutes from Las Palmas. DSLPA provides intercultural exchange, partner-school programs and competitions such as Jugend Musiziert and Model United Nations, and offers Bachillerato alongside the Abitur. After-school activities supplement the curriculum, fostering language development and inquiry.
