Eleven years ago, in January 2015, a small family in Granada opened a Montessori school with three children in a small space in the city center, creating Granada's first Montessori school. The school moved to a permanent location a few months later and became Centro Montessori Galápagos, named in honor of the founder's love for the wild islands. It is now Granada International Montessori School, a well-established educational community that has welcomed hundreds of students from more than 15 nationalities. The school obtained international accreditation from the Middle States Association, becoming the first Granada school to achieve this recognition, and learning is delivered primarily in English within an immersion environment. Montessori pedagogy guides the approach, fostering autonomy, concentration, responsibility, intrinsic motivation, and a love of learning.
Granada International Montessori School is a community, not just a school, welcoming hundreds of students from more than 15 nationalities. The school views parents as the first teachers in life and collaborates with them to provide the best possible educational experience. Parents are invited to observe in the classroom, participate in family workshops and activities, help organize field trips or school events, and connect with other parents, building a network that links the classroom with the wider world. An Adult Learning Community gathers the adults at GIMS for ongoing sessions on pedagogy and Montessori resources for parents, and support groups help organize celebrations, improve facilities, maintain the vegetable garden, and create fundraising events.
Parents participate actively in the school's life. They observe in the classroom, join family workshops and activities, help organize field trips and school events, and connect with other families. All adults at GIMS form part of an Adult Learning Community, with regular sessions to learn about pedagogy and Montessori resources for parents. GIMS has support groups that help organize celebrations, improve facilities, maintain the vegetable garden, and create fundraising events. Families describe the experience as respectful, reflecting a collaborative partnership between home and school. These structures foster ongoing parent involvement and community-building.
