Additional Learning Needs (ALN) supports students whose first language is not Spanish. The ALN team offers Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) classes to ensure that students learn the basics and develop language skills. English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is provided for students who need help improving their English. The school promotes inclusive practice and provides targeted support to meet learners' needs within the admissions process.
English is the main language at the International English School of Castellón. The school provides a completely English environment with subjects taught by native teachers. Early Years involves total immersion in English. From Year 3, students are exposed to both French and German, with the option to continue one language from Year 4, and Valenciano is included in the curriculum from Year 2 to Year 11. English language support (EAL) is available for students who need help improving their English.
Emotional wellbeing and mental health are addressed within safeguarding policies. Staff are trained to observe changes in behaviour and to refer concerns to the Child Protection and Wellbeing Coordinator for appropriate support. The CPWC, Ana Gutiérrez, leads safeguarding and wellbeing, with designated safeguarding leads for EYFS/Primary and Secondary. The policy covers inter-agency collaboration with social services, health services and the police, and outlines how concerns and referrals are managed, including attention to online safety and mental health signposting when needed.
Safeguarding is a School priority with safer recruitment procedures and safeguards to protect pupils. The school works with local authorities, social services, the police and other agencies to promote welfare and respond to concerns. The Child Protection and Wellbeing Coordinator leads safeguarding, supported by designated safeguarding leads for EYFS/Primary and Secondary, and there are clear reporting, recording and escalation procedures for concerns or allegations. Staff are trained to share information appropriately and to act promptly in line with local and national guidance, including steps for dealing with allegations against adults. The school provides contacts for local authorities and maintains policy review and governance that involves Dukes Spain leadership in safeguarding matters.
British International Education from 1 to 18 years old. An online admission form runs in nine steps. A separate online registration form is required for each child. For Year 1 and above information from previous schools is required, including recent school reports and references; Taster days allow experience before final enrolment. For Secondary (11–15 years old) a family interview and observation is conducted, and entrance tests in English and Maths may be required; Spanish tests may be conducted for non-Spanish speakers. For Sixth Form (16–18 years old) a family interview and observation is conducted, and entrance tests in English and Maths may be required, with Spanish tests for non-Spanish speakers in some cases. Reports from previous schools may be requested. Language support is available if a child has limited English or Spanish and sufficient resources allow; private tuition may be arranged if resources are limited. Non-European students requiring a visa may incur a higher enrolment fee, with the difference compensated at the end of the first academic year; full details are provided during the process. Admission is confirmed by the Head of Admissions after the process. Securing a place requires admission grant, payment of the registration fee, and signing of the enrolment form by both parents or guardians. If a class is full, a waiting list is established. Necessary documentation includes: visit sheet, registration form with any special educational needs information, recent school reports, parents and student DNI/Passport/NIE, student medical card, vaccination record, updated medical report if applicable, proof of enrollment fee payment, translated documents if required, and any completed questionnaires. Induction for mid-year entries: Early Years and Primary have a tailored adaptation period; Secondary and Sixth Form have an induction plan. Equality and non-discrimination: admissions are open to all applicants regardless of race, gender, religion, nationality or disability. Right of refusal of admission: the school reserves the right to refuse admission if it cannot meet the student's educational or pastoral needs. Honest disclosure: parents must disclose their child's educational, physical and emotional needs during the admissions process; failure to disclose may result in withdrawal of an offer.
