International School of Madrid (ISM) is a British international school founded in 1971, located in the Chamartín district of Madrid. It educates over 800 pupils aged 2–18, from early years to Sixth Form. ISM follows the English National Curriculum, with EYFS, Key Stage 3–4, IGCSE at the end of Year 11 and British A Levels in Sixth Form. A French Curriculum is also offered, while Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge A Levels feature in its syllabus. Spanish language and Cultura Española are taught to meet local requirements, accounting for around 20% of curriculum time. The school operates a Primary site and a Secondary site. Facilities include science laboratories, computer suites and art studios, plus a large sports hall and access to pitches and tracks for swimming, athletics and games. Extracurriculars include a house system, drama performances, Booster Classes, Robotics and Chess, plus Storytelling & Book Club and other activities supporting leadership.

International School of Madrid - Primary School teaches British Curriculum, EYFS (Early years foundation stage) for students aged 1 to 11.
ISM uses the English National Curriculum as the framework of its teaching. In Key Stage Three (Years 7–9) and Key Stage Four (Years 10–11) students study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, French, Art & Design, Computing, Music, Drama, Physical Education & Sports, and Religion or Citizenship. Spanish language and Cultura Española are taught according to local Spanish requirements, around 20% of curriculum time. Students sit the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations at the end of Year 11. In Sixth Form (Years 12–13), ISM offers British A Level courses with a wide range of subjects, including English Literature, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Business Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Art & Design, History, Geography, Sociology, French and Spanish; Spanish studies are part of Sixth Form, and Cambridge English exams (C1/C2) are available.
Class sizes in Sixth Form are small, averaging around 9 per class.
2025 Exam Results: Our students once again surpassed the UK national averages in all areas. Our IGCSE results at the end of Year 11 were excellent, with 46% of grades being awarded the top A/A grades and our students surpassing international A-C grades in all subjects. A Level results: A or A 38%; A - C 79%; Pass rate A-E 99%. IGCSE results: A or A 58%; A - B 84%; A - C 99%. Year 13 results: almost three-quarters of students were awarded A-B grades.
Graduates are prepared for universities in the UK, Spain, the US and other countries. Current UK university destinations include University of Bath, University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, LSE, University of London, UCL and King's College London. Spanish university destinations include Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Europea de Madrid and IE University. Other destinations include universities in the USA and other countries.
The school recognises high achievement through the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards; ISM has received 104 of these awards since they were first given out in 2009, regularly receiving more awards than any other centre in Spain.
ISM provides pastoral care in an inclusive environment that values all students and families, creating a family/community atmosphere where students feel safe and secure. There is fluid communication between home and school to support pupils' social and emotional development. ISM cares about the whole child, not just exam results, and provides a nurturing and supportive setting. A Learning Support Department addresses social-emotional development, working with tutors and managers. The Student Government in Primary and the Student Leadership Team in Secondary mentor younger pupils, reinforcing social and moral development. The ISM House system promotes belonging and provides structure to support social-emotional growth and responsible choices.
ISM has an active Learning Support and Special Educational Needs Department. The Department has a series of fundamental objectives designed to improve the quality of education provided, create and consolidate social values, and help weld effective relationships within the school community. Advice, Guidance, Assessment, and Support are provided. It offers 1:1, small group, or whole class support, as appropriate.
The school teaches in English and follows the English National Curriculum. Early Years Foundation Stage places do not require prior knowledge of English; later years require sufficient knowledge of English to access the curriculum. In the secondary years, many Year 7 pupils take the Cambridge ESOL PET, and Year 9 pupils take the FCE examination. The French department prepares pupils for Alliance Française CAF tests, and as pupils start French in Year 5, there is potential for proficiency in English, Spanish and French.
ISM has a Learning Support Department that includes the school psychologist and the school counsellor to support pupils' mental wellbeing. The department uses assessment and screening to evaluate emotional, social, and intellectual development and to identify needs. Support is provided 1:1, in small groups, or to whole classes, as appropriate. Pastoral care creates a nurturing environment and maintains open communication with parents. The House system and Student Government promote belonging and social-emotional growth.
ISM creates a safe and secure environment for students. There is an open door policy for parents and accessible contact information to discuss concerns. The school provides information to parents about their child's education. There is close communication between tutors and school managers, alongside the Learning Support Department, to address all aspects of pupils' social and emotional development. The House system and Student Government contribute to a safe, supportive school culture that promotes belonging and responsible choices.
1. Get in touch. Enrolment for the 2026–27 academic year begins now. The relevant Admissions director will take you on a tour of our facilities and introduce you to the head teachers and coordinators. If you can't visit in person, we will arrange a virtual tour.
2. Visit Us. Come and see the school for yourselves or arrange a virtual tour. This will be an opportunity to meet the team, understand our philosophy and approach, and ask questions. In-person tours are available, or a virtual tour can be arranged.
3. Entrance Tests. Entrance tests may be required from Year 7 to Year 13 and a child's latest report from their current school is required. Children applying for Early Years Foundation Stage do not need prior knowledge of English to access the curriculum at the appropriate level.
4. Enrol. On receipt of the application form, successful entrance tests and a deposit, a place for the appropriate academic year is confirmed and you are welcomed into the ISM family. Admissions are open throughout the year.
A waiting list exists; when a place becomes available due to a pupil leaving or absence, the place is offered to the next child on the waiting list.
