Istituto Italiano Statale Comprensivo di Barcellona is a state Italian comprehensive school abroad serving students from age 3 to 18 across two Barcelona campuses. Established in 1882 and state-recognized as a school in 1951, it combines Italian instruction with local language study and a framework aligned to both Italian and Spanish authorities. The curriculum follows Infanzia (kindergarten), Primaria, and Secondary I and II Grado, with Italian as the main language of instruction and additional Catalan, Spanish and English taught as part of a multilingual program. Primary class hours run around 40 per week; Secondary I Grado and II Grado follow 30–34 and 34–35 hours respectively. The primary and lower secondary campus houses the Italian Paritaria Kindergarten. The school participates in Escoles + Sostenibles environmental education and integrates local subjects to enable recognition by local authorities. Facilities span two campuses hosting primary, lower and upper secondary (including a scientific lyceum) program.

Education is organized into Infanzia, Primaria, and Secondary (I and II Grado). The medium of instruction is Italian, with a multilingual curriculum including Catalan, Spanish and English. Infanzia follows the National Guidelines for the Curriculum of the Kindergarten and the first cycle of education. Primaria lasts five years (ages 6–10) with a 40-hour weekly schedule; Italian instruction covers history, geography, mathematics, science, English, music, and art and physical education, with Catholic religion available as an option; students also study Spanish, Catalan and local culture. Secondaria I Grado lasts three years (ages 11–13) at 30 hours per week (34 in the first year), with Italian, history and geography, mathematics, sciences, English, technology, music, art, physical education, Catholic religion (optional), Spanish, Catalan and local culture; Secondaria II Grado lasts four years (ages 14–17) at 35 hours per week (34 in the first year) with Italian, Latin, history and geography, English, mathematics, physics, science, philosophy, drawing and history of art, physical education, religion or alternative (optional), Spanish, Catalan and local culture. The school participates in Escoles + Sostenibles environmental education.
Approximately 70 students are in Infanzia with 4 teachers, for a student-to-teacher ratio of about 17.5 to 1.
Bienestar (wellbeing) is included in the PTOF planning with ongoing updates; the school runs projects such as Educating for Democratic Values to promote wellbeing and values education.
The school provides support teachers for students with disabilities, educators, and school psychologists who work closely with the CdC (Class Councils) and the school leadership to promote inclusion and academic success for all students with Special Educational Needs.
Italian is the primary language of instruction; the language curriculum also includes Catalan, Spanish and English.
School psychologists provide direct support to students, and wellbeing is a planning focus within the PTOF.
The school uses inclusion practices with the help of school psychologists and supportive staff to safeguard and support the welfare of students, coordinating with CdC and school leadership.
1. Admissions for the 2026-2027 academic year were open from January 13, 2026 to February 14, 2026. New students and those starting the first year in each cycle must complete Module A and Module B. For those entering the first year of secondary education, the Musical Address form must also be completed, subject to Ministry approval. For all other classes, only the Confirmation of Enrollment form (Module C) is required.
2. The enrollment contribution is €160. The forms allow updating student and family data (address, contacts) and, if desired, changing the Catholic religion enrollment option. The school does not use the online enrollment system provided by the Ministry of Education for Italy.
3. For those who opt to pay by bank transfer (domiciliazione bancaria), the charges are as follows: the liceo is charged in April 2026; primary and middle school in March 2026. Payment is to be made to Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) with account name Istituto Italiano Statale Comprensivo di Barcellona; IBAN ES7001824162210208522057; BIC/SWIFT BBVAESMM; use the banking transfer reference “Contributo per iscrizione 2026/2027” plus the student's name. The enrollment contribution covers part of operating costs and is required to support the school's activities.
4. Attachments accompany the enrollment packet: Allegato A is the enrollment form for first-year classes; Allegato B is the declaration of payment method; Allegato C is the enrollment confirmation for the next class; Allegato D contains the scoring criteria for the waitlist. An Iscrizione Corso Musicale attachment is included for first-year enrollment in the secondary cycle. The forms provide guidance on updating data and on the option to change religious instruction. The school's Transparency section will publish major procurement documents, and annual budgets will be published by March 31 each year.
Waiting lists for the 2024/25 school year were published on February 23, 2024. The lists show the position, student name, and points. Waiting lists remain valid until September 2024 to allow ranking and the assignment of places that become available due to withdrawals. Applicants submitted by consular staff or equivalents have absolute precedence at every stage of place assignment. The school secretariat will promptly inform families when enrollment can be finalized upon the availability of the requested place.
