Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

French education began in Palma in 1966, initiated by a few French families to promote French language and culture, with classes initially held in a garage. In January 1970, the Ecole Française de Palma opened in Génova, serving about 40 pupils with five primary and four secondary classes, and secondary courses were taught by the Centre National de Télé-Enseignement (CNTE). In 1975, rapid growth led to the creation of the Association Culturelle Française des Baléares (ACFB) to establish the Collège Français de Palma at Villa Mercedes in the Terreno district, under the Mission Laïque Française. In 1990, the collège joined the AEFE network after signing an agreement with AEFE, and in 2009 Seconde, Première and Terminale were homologated and the collège became Lycée Français de Palma. A new annex opened in 2011, a third annex in 2017, and the cornerstone of the new lycée was laid on January 27, 2018.

Community

Projects and events illustrate active student and community involvement. Christmas Market is held each year where all kindergarten and elementary students prepare items sold to parents to raise funds for a charity chosen by the students, with student work on display and a Christmas songs concert. La Course contre la Faim in May gathers students from kindergarten to Terminale for a large charity run at Son Moix to raise funds for Action against Hunger, with association members visiting to raise awareness beforehand. Euro Parlement Palma models the European Parliament, organized by LFIPalma and the Balearic Education Department, bringing together around 80 students in its 6th edition and using multiple languages including French, Spanish and English. Environmental protection efforts involve middle and high school students, in collaboration with research institutes IEO, IMEDEA, SOCIB and local associations, and include a film cycle on environmental topics. The end-of-year celebration occurs in the last week of June with an outdoor show and diploma ceremonies for Terminale students.

Parent-Teacher Association

APPI – Alliance Parents Padres Indépendants – is the LFIP Palma parent association, a collective of elected and volunteering parents across the school. APPI is an independent group whose representatives are elected officially by LFIP families according to procedures defined by the Mission Laïque Française and French authorities. Its values are benevolence, listening, transparency and autonomy. APPI's role includes representing families in LFIP's official bodies, communicating information clearly and factually, relaying parent needs and concerns, and acting independently within the legal framework of parental representation. APPI operates autonomously to maintain a calm, clear, and compliant communication environment and to avoid misunderstandings in family communications. APPI participates openly in LFIP, contributing to projects, events and actions with its own or joint initiatives in the interest of students and families, with volunteer engagement focused on the well-being and success of all students.
