Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

PSHE is taught in Primary. The Early Years offers an English-immersion environment from Nursery to Reception that develops social, emotional, and communication skills from day one. Primary and Middle School build a solid academic and personal foundation in English with native-teacher delivery of key subjects, including PSHE. The enrichment programme complements core learning with activities such as Model United Nations and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, fostering leadership, collaboration, and resilience. The school emphasises personal development, respect, and collaborative learning across its curriculum.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

SENCO Department is led by María de la Vega (SENCO) and Sara Ruiz (School Psychologist), who work with Emily Westwood (Pastoral Care Manager). They collaborate with teachers and families to ensure students with special educational needs receive appropriate support. They focus on students' emotional well-being and mental health, designing tailored interventions to support holistic development. They organise workshops and activities for students, families, and teachers to promote emotional well-being and a close-knit educational community. The school provides educational and emotional support to meet the needs of students with SEN.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

ELD (English Language Development) and SLD (Spanish Language Development) classes are designed for students who have not yet mastered English or Spanish. A specialized language development team supports each student in their learning. Through ELD, students improve fluent English communication and progress academically; through SLD, they access the mainstream curriculum in Spanish. The approach is applied across Primary to High School, helping students participate in school activities and celebrate cultural diversity. Learning English and Spanish opens up opportunities and supports smooth transitions between school stages.

Mental Wellbeing

The SENCO department focuses on students' emotional well-being and mental health, designing tailored interventions to support holistic development. They organise workshops and activities for students, families, and teachers to promote emotional well-being and healthy relationships. They work with the School Psychologist and Pastoral Care Manager as part of a wellbeing-oriented team. Resources for families include the Wellbeing Guide and materials addressing intense emotions.

Safeguarding

Sage College has a Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy that is reviewed annually. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children are everyone's responsibility, with staff trained and designated safeguarding leadership (DSL). The School Leadership Team ensures safeguarding arrangements, with a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and an alternate DSL who are available during term time. All staff are trained to identify signs of abuse or neglect and to report concerns, following clear escalation pathways and working with other agencies as needed. The policy covers online safety, bullying (including cyberbullying), special educational needs and disability, medical needs, and safeguarding across school operations.
