Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The school has a history spanning more than 400 years with German as the language of instruction and German examinations. In 1612, the German parish of St. Gertrud was granted the privilege to maintain a German school by King Gustav II Adolf. German merchants have lived in Stockholm for centuries, and their children were educated at the German School to become capable and commercially minded youths as well as devout and loyal subjects to the Swedish crown. After World War II, the school's operations resumed in 1953. Since 1977, many Swedish and international students start in kindergarten or first grade without German knowledge; they learn German as a foreign language through year four and then follow the same path as their German-speaking peers to the German Abitur and a concurrent Swedish studentexamen.

Community

Two cultures – one community. With more than 400 years of history, the school offers education from preschool to the German International Abitur and the Swedish student exam. The bilingual preschool develops Swedish and German language skills and introduces pupils to both cultures, traditions and customs. The school serves about 600 students from 26 nationalities, and 100% of teachers are qualified. The school provides after-school care for students up to grade 3 and fosters intercultural exchange and a welcoming atmosphere through activities and student and parent involvement. The school also hosts and supports cultural and extracurricular activities through student and parent involvement, including annual events such as a late-November Christmas Bazaar.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parent Council consists of two elected parent representatives per class, and one representative per preschool group. The council's board—chair, vice-chair, secretary, treasurer and other members— is elected at the annual meeting for a two-year term. It promotes lively cooperation between teachers, parents and students by planning events and other parent activities in coordination with the school leadership and the German School Association. The council meets monthly to discuss current issues and vote on proposals. A large portion of the council's funds subsidizes courses such as chess, crafts, floorball and dance; it also provides grants for class trips, projects, after-school activities and preschool. Since 1997 it has funded student caps and their ceremonial handover is organized and financed. Revenues come from the Christmas Bazaar and the Culture Market; all parents are invited to contribute to the well-being of our children.
