Introduction

Located in central Gothenburg, Hvitfeldtska Gymnasiet is a public high school with heritage dating back to 1647. The school offers the IB Diploma Programme (DP) alongside the national Swedish system, with the DP beginning in 1988, making it one of Sweden's oldest IB DP programs. The program is run in three stages: Pre-DP/Grade 10 (50–60 students) taught in English, Grade 11/DP Year 1 (about 80–90 students), and Grade 12/DP Year 2 for students who complete Year 1, with transfers determined individually. The IB curriculum provides breadth and depth across subjects aligned to the Swedish framework, and some courses are adapted to prepare students for Diploma study. Approximately 2,000 students attend the school, with around 240 in the IB; collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology offers physics labs and expert support. Open House events are scheduled for November 21, 2026, and January 16, 2027, and IB Ambassadors assist prospective students.

Tuition fees (by year group and per term / per year)

- Grade 11 (IB Diploma first year): No tuition fee. Education is provided without charge.
- Grade 12 (IB Diploma second year): No tuition fee. Education is provided without charge.

Billing schedule and payment terms
- There is no billing schedule or termly tuition invoice for standard instruction because no tuition is charged for gymnasial education.
- For any optional or incidental charges (for example: voluntary study trips, optional activities, materials beyond standard teaching resources, or external exam/assessment charges that may be levied), invoices or payment notices are issued for the specific item and must be paid by the due date stated on that invoice; payment terms for such charges follow the billing notice.

Boarding fees
- Hvitfeldtska operates as a central day gymnasium and does not operate boarding facilities; therefore there are no boarding fees.

Other costs or fees (uniforms, textbooks, materials, exam or activity charges)
- Uniforms: There is no compulsory school uniform for Hvitfeldtska; no uniform fee is charged as a standard requirement.
- Textbooks and core learning materials: Students are to be provided access to required textbooks and other essential learning tools without charge as part of publicly funded gymnasial education. Where a pupil must have a personal item or a specific optional material, the school or organiser may ask that the pupil supply it or pay no more than the acquisition cost.
- IB assessment / examination fees: The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) charges assessment and candidate/subject fees for Diploma Programme assessments. These fees are set by the IBO; when they apply they are billed through the school. Whether and how those IBO assessment fees are invoiced to the student (versus covered by the school or municipality) is handled administratively by the school.
- Field trips and optional activities: Costs for optional trips, external providers, or extracurricular activities may be charged separately; the exact amounts and whether they are compulsory depend on the specific activity. Refund and cancellation terms for such charges follow the provider's or the school's stated terms for that activity.

Refund information
- Tuition and application refunds: There are no tuition or application fees to refund for standard gymnasial education at Hvitfeldtska.
- Optional charges and external-provider refunds: Refund rules for optional charges (for example trip cancellations, external course fees, or IB assessment fees) follow the school's published terms for that activity or the external provider/IBO refund policy for the specific fee; any refund availability and deadlines are determined by the billing authority for that charge.

Fee payment options
- Standard instruction: No tuition payment is required.
- Incidental or optional charges: When the school or municipality issues an invoice for a billed item, common payment methods used by Swedish public education bodies include payment by bank transfer, e‑invoice or card as specified on the invoice; specific accepted payment methods are stated on each invoice or payment notice. IB assessment fees are collected via the school according to the school's invoicing instructions.

Summary statement: Hvitfeldtska Gymnasiet is a publicly operated gymnasium in central Gothenburg. Standard admission and the regular three‑year gymnasial/IB programme are provided without tuition or application fees. Incidental charges can occur only for optional services, external assessments or specific optional activities; those charges are invoiced separately and follow the stated payment and refund rules for the billed item.

Admissions

Admissions

1. Eligibility and year levels. The IB program accepts applicants to Grade 10 (Pre-DP) or Grade 11 (IB Diploma). Applicants must be under 20 years old, and may be considered regardless of prior schooling, including applicants from any type of school. 2. How to apply. Applications are submitted via APPLY HERE. Grade 10 applications involve the City of Gothenburg admissions system and INDRA; it is through INDRA that applicants learn whether a place is offered or a reserve list placement. A placement test is required. Applicants send the latest grade report, which should be on school letterhead and translated into English by someone at the school, signed by the translator and by their role at the school. 3. When to apply. Outside Sweden, February 2 is the deadline for the following school year starting in August. This is the latest deadline if the stay in Sweden depends on obtaining a place. It can take up to four months to process a residence permit. Inside the EU, June 1 is the absolute latest to apply so that placement testing can be completed. An admissions timeline overview is available here. 4. Special considerations for students outside of the EU and/or those who plan to come without their family. Email communications should be signed; conversations should be kept within an existing thread. The student and family must act with academic integrity; the school reserves the right to close an application if a breach is detected, including not following instructions, misrepresenting information, or not following placement testing. 5. Planning your arrival if offered a place. Hvitfeldtska is not a boarding school and does not provide accommodation. If living abroad and coming to Gothenburg to study, a residence permit may be required and can take several months to process. 6. Residence permit and acceptance. The permit process cannot be completed until a place is known; an acceptance letter is provided when needed. Permit processing can take up to four months, so early planning is advised. 7. Students who may study without their parents. This may occur only under strict conditions, including a confirmed place for full-time study, an online meeting with the principal or admissions group, guardians able to participate in online talks in English or with a translator, written parental consent, ability to arrange travel and lodging independently, and verification that residence-permit processes are feasible. 8. You live in Sweden now. Applicants can still apply to Grade 10 or Grade 11; eligibility remains under 20; previous schooling does not preclude consideration. The application steps include submitting forms via APPLY HERE, with Grade 10 applicants who are new to Sweden also using INDRA. 9. Students delayed in starting. Grade 11 cannot start late; the Diploma Program runs as a two-year course with attendance required from day one. 10. Fees. There is no tuition, but a final-year IB examination fee (approximately 750 euros) applies within the City of Gothenburg. The school provides textbooks, a computer, and lunch on school days; some subjects may require additional purchases. 11. Registration status in Grades 11-12. The IB path is a university-prepared trajectory; the Principal makes the final decision on a student's registration status with the IB, with multiple checkpoints and guidance from the Study and Career Counselor when candidacy is considered.

Waitlist

The school uses a reserve list as part of the admissions process. For Grade 10 applications from outside Sweden, the applicant logs into INDRA to learn whether a place is offered or a reserve list placement. The Principal makes the final decision on a student's registration status with the IB and can determine status at any point in the program.
