ISGR was founded in 1997 to meet the needs of the growing number of expatriate families coming to Gothenburg. ISGR is owned by the Gothenburg Region, made up of thirteen municipalities. ISGR is a not-for-profit organisation. Together with IHGR, ISGR offers a continuum of IB programmes: Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and the Diploma Programme. ISGR is CIS-accredited since 2008 and expanded the Guldheden campus with 4,000 m2, welcoming students in August 2025.
ISGR has a community of students, families, and staff from more than 60 nationalities. The two sections share common values and operate as one school. ISGR emphasizes Quality, Diversity, and Community as core values. Student well-being is supported by a comprehensive Student Health Team, including nurses, psychologists, learning specialists, and counselors.
The ISGR Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a volunteer-led group that brings together parents, guardians, and staff to build a strong, inclusive, and fun school community. The PTA organises events that help families connect, support school initiatives, and bring joy to students of all ages. Everything is volunteer-based, with some parents planning a single event, others joining working groups, and some supporting behind the scenes. The Parent Council is a group of parent representatives who meet regularly with school leadership to share feedback, discuss ideas, and raise important questions. Within the Council, each class or year group has a representative to reflect the voices of all families and support collaboration. Examples of PTA activities include a Week to Remember – Year 8 LgrM on Work Experience at the Fire & Rescue Service and Volvo guest visits.
International School of the Gothenburg Region is a not-for-profit organisation with two sections: an International Section delivering the IB Primary Years Programme for ages 5–11 and the IB Middle Years Programme for 11–16, and a Swedish National Section (LgrP/LgrM). The school is in Gothenburg, Sweden, and has CIS accreditation since 2008. It participates in the IB Diploma Programme through IHGR, providing a continuous IB pathway. English is the main language of instruction in the international section; Grade 1 onwards includes a Host Country Swedish Language and Culture program, with English Language Acquisition support and Mother Tongue classes available. ISGR operates on two campuses: Guldheden for primary and Götaberg for middle and high school. Facilities include bright classrooms, libraries, art, music and science rooms, outdoor spaces, a football pitch and a PE hall (expanded in 2025). After-school PAL care and clubs cover coding, language cafés, exchanges and service projects for students.
