Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The English School Gothenburg began in 1958 when The British Consul, Thomas Tull, started ESG with seven pupils for an English-speaking education. It moved locations several times and, after 60 years, became a Swedish independent school with over 500 pupils representing more than 40 nationalities. In 2018 ESG celebrated its 60th birthday. It is based in western Gothenburg and moved to its current site in the early 1990s; the school operates as a Foundation with no profits, using any surplus funds to improve facilities and conditions for staff and students.

Community

Engaged parents choose ESG and support their children in English and Swedish. Our aim is that the young people meet the future with knowledge, confidence and respect. We receive positive feedback from local gymnasiums and many ESG graduates go on to universities in the UK, the US and Sweden.

Parent-Teacher Association

The PTA organizes optional after-school music lessons at ESG. These lessons are run solely by parent volunteers and take place after regular school hours. Lessons run in the Fall and Spring terms, with an optional concert at the end of the Spring Term. Lessons last 30 minutes and can be individual, mini-group (two children) or group (three to five children). Registration is via the online form on ESG's site, and a free trial lesson is offered for new instrument students at the end of the Spring Term. For questions, email ESGPTAMusic@gmail.com.

It serves ages 0 to 15 and follows the Swedish curriculum with a liberal arts approach, delivering learning in both English and Swedish. Surplus funds are reinvested into facilities and staff development, with active participation in Energikicken, Göteborgsvarvet, and year-round sports days.
