AAIA was established to address the lack of international schooling in New Taipei City. The school's founder Allan Liang coordinated with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and local education authorities, and in November 2014 AAIA received the founding license and approval to plan New Taipei City's first international American curriculum school. Groundbreaking for the campus occurred in July 2015, with the first cohort of students beginning in August 2016. The class of 2018-2019 marked AAIA's first graduating class. AAIA earned Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation in July 2021, with ongoing accreditation milestones noted in 2023.
AAIA describes itself as a caring community dedicated to student success, guided by its ESLO framework. The school operates a house-based life program, including the Pantheon house and Thought Club activities that bring students, teachers, and parents together to discuss school matters. The calendar features community events such as the Community Impact Project (CIP) annually, as well as Sports Day and the AAIA Art Exhibition, along with other family-oriented activities. An active alumni network connects graduates to US and global universities and programs.
AAIA maintains an active Parent Teacher Association that coordinates parent involvement in school life. The PTA is credited with organizing the AAIA Street Fair, the school's first major community event, which brought together families for food, performances, and activities; this event has continued in subsequent years as a cornerstone of parent engagement. PTA volunteers support campus events and fundraisers, helping with decorations, logistics, and family facing activities such as open houses and seasonal celebrations. The school also highlights family participation through clubs and events that involve parents as volunteers and supporters, including cross school collaborations and exhibitions. The PTA works in concert with the school leadership to promote family involvement and community building.
