TAAS began in 1955 as a small home-style school for overseas Seventh-day Adventist missionaries and doctors at Taiwan Adventist Hospital. It started in the hospital basement, with Miss Paterson as the first teacher and daily administration provided by Mr. Carter and Mr. Aaby. The school moved to Yangmingshan, and by 1986 a three-level building was completed on the site. In 1991 TAAS was registered with the Taiwan government as a foreign school for international students, enabling broader enrollment. Renovations in the 1990s through the 2010s expanded facilities, including major changes in 2010 and 2016 to create Chinese and EAL classrooms, learning support offices, music rooms, and a multipurpose kitchen; governance is provided by a Board of Directors consisting of seven to eleven members, with ex-officio representation from the Taiwan Conference of SDA and New Life International Church.
TAAS fosters a close-knit community with a holistic focus, offering music concerts, Camp Taiwan, mission trips, community service, and field trips as part of student life. The school hosts annual community events such as Walk-a-thon, Community Barbeque, International Food Fair, and Educational Fairs, with active participation from parents and staff. Additional service projects and community-service activities are integrated into campus life, giving students opportunities to engage with the wider community.
TAAS does not publish a standalone PTA page on its site; parent involvement is described through events and volunteer opportunities linked to School Life. Examples of events with parent participation include the Walk-a-thon, Community Barbeque, International Food Fair, and Educational Fairs. The International Food Fair page notes that booths are run by parents and staff, often highlighting country-themed booths. The TAAS governance structure is described on the School Board page, which states that the Board of Directors has seven to eleven members, with six ex-officio members from the Taiwan Conference of SDA and New Life International Church, and that terms are three years with bi-monthly meetings. Interested families can learn about involvement by contacting the school through its Giving or School Life communications and by volunteering at events.
