Lamai International School was established in January 2016 on Koh Samui, Thailand. The school was created as an independent, privately run institution offering an international curriculum to local and expatriate families. Since its founding, LIS has expanded to include Early Years, Primary, and Lower Secondary levels. It continues to operate as a small-scale international school focused on Cambridge-based education in a community setting.
The school community is active in cultural, environmental, and social events throughout the year. Students and families participate in Thai cultural celebrations such as Wai Khru Day and Loy Krathong, as well as international events like Halloween, World Book Day, and Winter Holiday shows. Community projects also link to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as Plastic-Free Day, the Scholarship Car Wash fundraiser, and the LIS Fun Run.
The school does not publicly list a formal Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or specific parent-led groups. However, parents are actively involved in school community events, including seasonal markets, cultural celebrations, and fundraising initiatives. Families often collaborate with staff during events such as the Winter Holiday Show and school fairs, helping to organise activities, stalls, and games. While no structured PTA is described, parent participation is encouraged and visible in community-focused school events.
Lamai International School, located in the Maret sub-district of Koh Samui, opened in January 2016. It welcomes children from age 3 through early secondary years in a co-educational setting, with class sizes capped at twenty students. The youngest learners follow the Early Years Foundation Stage through a Montessori approach, while older students progress into the Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary curriculum. All instruction is in English, and the program is complemented by the school’s Education for Sustainable Development initiative, which integrates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into daily learning. The school day runs from 08:35 to 16:00, including a lunch break and optional extracurricular activities in the afternoon. Transportation is available, and students receive a morning snack and lunch each day. The school is particularly noted for its focus on sustainability, small class sizes for close teacher support, and its integration of academic subjects with creative and environmental learning.
