ACI was founded in 1878 as a kindergarten in the Basmane district of İzmir by American educators. In 1913 a 7-acre garden in Göztepe became the campus core. The name American Collegiate Institute was introduced in the early 1900s; a Salhane branch opened in 1919 to serve Turkish children, and by 1928 four girls graduated from the campus. Coeducation began in 1986, and SEV began active administration in the 1990s; in 1994 ACI was the first Turkish school accredited by the European Council of International Schools and in 2005 it began offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The 1997 reform moved middle schooling into the primary level, with SEV establishing İzmir Elementary on the campus.
Traditional events at ACI include Spring Day, Alumni Reunions, Career Days, Founders' Day, and Bazaar Day. Students participate in a wide range of activities such as Model United Nations (MUN) in English, French or German, ISTA, MOODS, Winter Bazaar, Mole Day, and the ACI Tree Planting Project. Cultural activities include the Turkish Literature Festival, Turkish and English Drama, and Philosophy Olympics. Students also compete in national and international contests such as TUBİTAK, IELTS, SAT, and various mathematics and science Olympiads.
The PTA aims to facilitate clear communication between parents and the school, organize activities that support children's education, and protect the ACI spirit and solidarity. PTA members are elected annually at a general assembly, and all parents are natural members of the PTA. The Board of Directors governs the PTA within the framework of national education regulations, and the PTA list is updated each year.
