Parent Experience

History

Founded in 2008, Deutsche Schule Izmir is the second branch of the Privatschule der Deutschen Botschaft Ankara. It is a competency‑oriented Gesamtschule with a focus on German language and culture. It is the only school in Izmir authorized by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) to award German Haupt- and Realschulabschlüsse and to provide a pathway to the upper secondary level; the school also awards the International Baccalaureate Diploma. It is not part of the Turkish Ministry of National Education; instead it is recognised as a cultural institution under the deutsch-türkischen Kulturabkommen and is under the auspices of the German Embassy Ankara or the Izmir General Consulate. As an Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule, it is linked to the Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) and operates with German curricula across a Grundschule, Sekundarstufe I with an orientation, a GIB program, and a Kindergarten, supported by German staff and resources.

Community

The school community is built on strong governance bodies, including the Schülervertretung (SV), the Schulelternbeirat (SEB), and the Personalrat (PR), alongside the Schulleitung, Vorstand, and Nichtpädagogisches Team. The campus features school social work, a library, a Mensa, an alumni network, Learn & Travel programs, and participation in competitions and prizes, reflecting an active, collaborative school life across Kindergarten, Grundschule, and Sekundarstufe. The school understands itself as an inclusive, democratic community with student, parent, and staff involvement shaping its programs and activities.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

The Elternbeirat (SEB) is the link between parents and the school and an indispensable part of the vibrant, innovative school life. The SEB team consists of two parent representatives per class and Kita group and is led by two chairs; in 2024/2025 Kristina Laubscher-Ülünçer and Alida Öztimur were elected. The SEB serves as the voice of the parents, collects wishes and feedback, and forwards them to the school leadership, governance bodies, and the relevant groups for consideration. It plays a key role in school development through working groups such as Ethikrat, Ganztagsausschuss, and Digi-Ausschuss, bringing the parents' perspective to future planning. The SEB also organises school festivals and events to foster community and exchange, and maintains close collaboration with the Schulleitung, the Vorstand, the Personalrat, and the Schülervertretung to implement improvements.
