AGS was founded by Mrs. Fatima Assad and licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education on October 1, 1994. The school moved to its present location in January 2008. It enrolls over 1,000 students from about 50 nationalities and is accredited by the Nova Scotia Department of Education as a private institution operating in the UAE. The KG-to-Grade 12 program is taught in English, with courses in French Language, Arabic Language and Islamic Studies for Muslim students.

A formal Parent Teacher Association is not described on public AGS materials; parent involvement is organized through the Get Involved pathway and leadership opportunities for parents and students. The Parent Orientation Booklet is published for new families. The school offers a broad after-school program (REAL) and athletics with clubs, creating opportunities for parent volunteers to support activities.
