Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Al Salam Private School was founded in 1985 by Ms. Sue Johnston as a small nursery in Dubai, establishing a family‑run independent school with an ethos of inclusivity and a value‑based education. It grew from a nursery into Al Salam Private School as enrolment and facilities expanded, and the school moved to its first purpose‑built campus in Al Nahda 2 as part of this growth. From 2019, the secondary provision was relocated to Al Twar 2 to support a broader secondary offering and the development of a separate Al Salam Community School. In 2021, Al Salam Private School re‑opened its secondary provision, continuing to serve students from Nursery through Year 13, and the group has grown to serve over 1200 students. The governance structure is familial, with the founders and senior leaders guiding the school's mission of placing “every child first.”

Community

Al Salam emphasizes an inclusive, values‑driven community that places belonging at the heart of school life. The DSIB inspection in 2023 highlighted the school's strong understanding of Islamic values and awareness of Emirati and world cultures across all phases. Community and cultural events feature in public materials, including coverage of UAE National Day celebrations and other school activities. Al Salam Community School has hosted large community events, such as Eid Al Fitr prayers that attracted thousands of participants, reflecting the school's role as a cultural hub for its families and wider community. The school also highlights wellbeing and pastoral care via its Caring Hearts framework, underscoring a holistic approach to student development.

Parent-Teacher Association

Parent involvement at Al Salam is evident through active participation in school events and volunteer-led activities. For example, a 2023 charity bake sale at Al Salam Community School raised AED 42,637, with the event described as being led by parents and featuring volunteer involvement and donation boxes. The school's community activities include a Model United Nations conference run under student leadership, with broad participation from students, staff, and families. Large cultural and religious events, such as Eid prayers at ASCS, demonstrate the school's engagement with families and the wider community. Public communications also reference initiatives that celebrate Emirati and global cultures and emphasize family involvement as part of the school's values. While a formal, publicly published PTA page is not highlighted in the available materials, parent engagement is clearly woven into the school's calendar through these activities and events.
