Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

JPS Connect and Wellbeing supports Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) through a fully inclusive approach that promotes the social and emotional wellbeing of all pupils, families and staff using a PERMA-based model of positive psychology, with a Wellbeing Team that includes Psychologists Helene de Bergeyck and Olivia Gavin and a Student Counsellor, Natalie Sinclair.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

JPS Connect delivers inclusive SEN support: the Inclusion department provides wellbeing support from school counsellors and learning support from Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), one-to-one or one-to-two LSA provisions with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) developed via Team Around the Child meetings, specialist literacy and numeracy provision, English Language Learning (ELL) support led by an ELL Coordinator, The Listening Program, enrichment for Gifted and Talented students, and access to external services such as Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Educational Psychologist assessments; Head of Inclusion is Jodie Quinn.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The English Language Learners (ELL) programme supports children whose first language is not English by assessing needs, providing targeted intervention that combines direct English language instruction with content-based sessions, and boosting vocabulary and comprehension through the Lexia Core 5 program; the ELL Programme Coordinator is Manique Piyatunga.

Mental Wellbeing

The Wellbeing Department aims to promote and protect the social and emotional wellbeing of all JPS pupils, families and staff, using the PERMA model to foster a positive community, emotions, health, relationships, achievement and mindset; the Wellbeing Team includes Psychologists Helene de Bergeyck and Olivia Gavin and a Student Counsellor, Natalie Sinclair.

Safeguarding

GEMS Jumeirah Primary School has a Designated Safeguarding Lead (Emma Hurst, Deputy Principal) with Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads Rachel Higgins (Principal/CEO) and Olivia Gavin (Head of Wellbeing); safeguarding policy aligns with UAE child protection requirements, and staff receive mandated safeguarding training; there is a whistleblowing policy and a School Safeguarding contact number +971 4 394 3500; the school also provides a Medical Department with two DHA-registered nurses and a full-time doctor.
