Hartland International School provides a dedicated wellbeing provision that supports students' emotional development across both primary and secondary phases. The wellbeing team includes Form Tutors, Heads of Year and Inclusion Specialists who work together to nurture resilience and healthy social interactions. Two fully trained School Counsellors provide confidential 1:1 and group support to help students manage stress and navigate personal challenges. The school emphasises a safe, inclusive community where belonging and respectful, empathetic relationships are promoted as part of social and emotional learning. Families are engaged as partners in wellbeing through communication and collaboration with staff.
Hartland International School uses an Inclusion programme designed to support pupils who require additional help to access the curriculum. Identification of needs is a whole-school responsibility, drawing on information from parents, previous schools and external agencies, as well as internal assessments. Provision is delivered mainly in the classroom by the Inclusion Team and Learning Support Assistants, with targeted 1:1 interventions coordinated with the SENDCO; the school counsellor may support wellbeing needs as part of the SEN provision. The school supports English language learners and a broad range of other learning needs and disabilities, including access to ASDAN programmes to develop personal, social and employability skills. Hartland is not a specialist SEN institution; inclusion and support are provided within a mainstream school.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is provided within Hartland's Inclusion and EAL framework. The school has an Acting Head of Inclusion & SENCO for Secondary and a Head of English as an Additional Language, with staff dedicated to ELL (English Language Learner) support. EAL provision includes targeted in-class support, small-group language development and access to dedicated ELL staff as part of the Inclusion team. First-language learners can be accommodated where possible, and language development is integrated with the broader curriculum to support academic progress. The language staffing reflects a commitment to inclusive language provision for international students.
Hartland regards wellbeing as a cornerstone of its ethos and operates a dedicated wellbeing provision that extends beyond the classroom. The pastoral care structure includes Form Tutors and Heads of Year who collaborate with families to build emotional resilience and a supportive school community. Two fully trained School Counsellors provide confidential support to help students navigate stress and personal challenges. In the Primary phase, wellbeing is focused on creating a safe, nurturing environment, while in the Secondary phase the emphasis is on resilience and social-emotional development as part of overall growth.
The KHDA 2023-2024 inspection rated Hartland International School as Very Good and noted that safeguarding and well-being are central to the school's inclusive, safe community, with health and safety arrangements forming part of the safeguarding framework. The wellbeing policy underpins an extensive programme to support a vibrant and harmonious school community. The Inclusion policy describes identification and provision for English language learners and other needs, with the SENDCO and Inclusion Team coordinating in-class and targeted interventions, and outside agencies available for assessments and interventions. English language learners and other SEN provisions include school counsellor support to meet wellbeing needs. Hartland operates within a mainstream setting rather than a specialist SEN institution.
